If you’ve ever wondered what happened to the titular Karate Kid or the mean boy who he kicked in the face, you’re in luck because the new series Cobra Kai continues their rivalry as suburban dads.

The Karate Kid, if you remember, was a seminal eighties martial arts film about a weedy kid learning how to stand up for himself through the medium of extensive martial arts training. It was part of that weird genre of film from the eighties that was all about bashing up bullies because they deserved it.

YouTube Red, the company’s attempt at a streaming service, has released a trailer for the official Karate Kid franchise spinoff, a 10 episode series called Cobra Kai.

Thrillingly, it stars the actual karate boy Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, who is rebooting his ancient rivalry with Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). They are both middle aged now, and Daniel LaRusso sells cars for a living.

Cobra Kai is set 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, and focuses on Johnny Lawrence, a no-good drunk, trying to get his life back together by re-starting up the infamous Cobra Kai dojo and teaching some teens how to fight dirty.

I’m not sure what we’ve done to deserve the resurrection of this beloved franchise, but I can only assume the answer is ‘age’. Anyone willing to bet that the original title of the spinoff was Karate Men?

Cobra Kai premieres on May 2 on YouTube Red. Watch the trailer below.
