Grimes Dops Bomb On Music Industry Sexism

Grimes has spoken to Rolling Stone Magazine this week, dropping bombs on the prevalence of sexism behind closed doors in the music industry. The comments come while Kesha is going through a nightmare of a time battling her producer Dr. Luke and Sony Music over sexual assault claims.

Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher says that numerous music producers have tried to pressure her into having sex with them and called the music industry “a hostile environment” for women. The 28-year-old Canadian singer gave a dark insight into her own experiences in the industry when asked for her thoughts on Kesha’s case saying that “I don’t know enough about the specifics of that situation because it seems very complicated”. But she went on to tell the mag,

“But I will say that I’ve been in numerous situations where male producers would literally be like, ‘We won’t finish the song unless you come back to my hotel room.’

“If I was younger or in a more financially desperate situation, maybe I would have done that.

I don’t think there are few female producers because women aren’t interested. It’s difficult for women to get in. It’s a pretty hostile environment.”

Meanwhile, Grimes revealed that rapper Jay Z has been a positive influence on her since she signed to his management label and she credits him with helping her to become more assertive. She said: “He told me to stop apologising so much. It was very difficult. Canadians have to say ‘sorry’ all the time. That’s actually really good advice.” On ya Z.
