Another awards show has come and gone, leaving us with plenty of killer performances and GIF-able moments. Typically, we spent most of the afternoon procrastinating by compiling some of our favourite parts from this year’s American Music Awards to bring to you, our rundown of what went down.

it all kicked off with J-Lo absolutely blowing everyone away with her opening dance routine to a mashup of 2015’s biggest hits. Somehow Lopez managed to survive with only minor whiplash.

One Direction were undoubtably the group to watch at this years AMA’s, taking home the ‘Artist Of The Year’ award and beating out other fan favourites like Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj.

AMA's Harry Styles

But what attracted the most attention to the group was the questionable 70’s inspired suit that group member Harry Styles wore. Many took to social media to draw comparisons between ‘Harry’s style’ and something the Beatles would have worn.

Other winners from the night include ‘Blank Space’ by Taylor Swift for ‘Song of the Year’, Ed Sheeran for ‘Best Pop Male Artist’ and Ariana Grande for ‘Best Female Pop Artist’.

As for the performances, Ariana Grande graced the stage in a cabaret style dress, singing her new single ‘Focus’ and hitting those high notes effortlessly. Demi Lovato also made the cut, belting out her album’s title track ‘Confident’ with two backup dancers by her side.

In a more sombre tone, Celine Dion performed a tribute to those who lost their lives during the Paris shootings with a rousing cover of Edith Piaf’s ‘Hymne a L’Amour’, leaving not a single dry eye in the room. It was epic.

No awards show would be complete without an iconic acceptance speech from the Queen of rap herself, Nicki Minaj, who provided some of the more inspiring and laughable moments of the night.

Thanking ‘Queen B’ when she accepted her award for Best hip-hop/rap artist, Minaj delighted her faithful Barbz with some heartfelt words. She also won Best Rap Album.

Justin Bieber closed the show with a medley of some of his biggest hits from his new album ‘Purpose’, performing ‘What Do You Mean’, ‘Where Are U Now?’ and finishing it off with ‘Sorry’ whilst rain fell from the roof, drenching Biebs and his dancers.

However the moment just didn’t live up to his robot dance earlier in the night:

Finally, social media was ablaze with tweets being sent out rapidly about this years awards show newcomer – none other than Ariana Grande’s Nonna! Awwwww.

The singers grandmother was caught being photographed with some of the biggest names in music all night, she even managed to get #NonnaGrande trending on Twitter.
