Winter is here, which generally means warm comfort food, more time on the couch by the heater and an easy excuse to not go for that run.

To keep your body healthy and minimise that warming winter weight, we have four super easy and effective things for you to do during the cold months.

1. Make smart food choices

Often in winter nothing seems better than a nice hot soup with some toast. If you’re heading out and buying soup go for the ones that are more broth based rather than the thick ones that generally have a heap of cream and oil in them. The general rule extends to the rest of your eating, go for salad with your parma rather than chips, use skinny milk where possible and make an effort to know what you are eating.

2. Get some sleep

Getting yourself in to a regular sleeping pattern makes the world of difference to your body’s immune system as well as its metabolism. Avoiding getting sick means you won’t be suck inside and a better metabolism means those bigger winter meals won’t do as much harm if you were getting to bed at irregular hours.

3. Get into a routine and seek out incidental exercise.

Make a concerted effort to stick to a simple exercise program for two straight weeks and you will want to get out and moving each time rather than dragging yourself out of bed. This doesn’t mean you need to get out and run 10 K’s everyday. it might be something as simple as getting off the train one stop early and walking the rest of the way or taking the stairs up to work rather than the lift.

4. Drink, drink, drink….water

Most of us wouldn’t get close to the 2 litres of water we are supposed to drink each day. Given we are about 60% water it makes sense to be getting enough of the clear stuff. Benefits include reducing cravings, energising your muscles, improved skin complexion and flushing toxins from your body. Fill up a water bottle or jug at your desk each each morning and see the difference it will make.
