Here’s What Was Happening In Australia 10 Years Ago
Wanna know something freaky? 2009 was 10 years ago. Yep, that means 1999 was 20 years ago. And yes, we’re all getting old and more wrinkly as we spend time reading this.
So it makes sense we did a bit of a dive into what the hell was really going on in 2009. What did the ARIAs look like? What did the Logies look like? What was the world like without The Bachelor or Married At First Sight?
Here’s what Australia looked like in 2009:
1. The prime minister was Kevin Rudd
2. MasterChef Australia premiered, with Julie Goodwin winning the first series
3. And Eamon Sullivan won the celebrity version of the show
4. Gordan Ramsay called Tracey Grimshaw an “old, ugly pig” in a public attack and she hit back with this statement
“I’m not going to sit meekly and let some arrogant narcissist bully me,” Grimshaw said in her statement on ACA.
5. Stan Walker won Australian Idol
6. McLeod’s Daughters aired its final episode
7. Empire of the Sun scooped up 7 awards at the ARIAs
8. And Bindi Irwin was actually nominated for an ARIA award for Bindi Kid Fitness 2 Jungle Dance Party, but lost out to The Wiggles
9. Packed To The Rafters scooped up at the 2009 Logies, with 11 nominations in total
10. ‘I Gotta Feeling’ by The Black Eyed Peas took out the number one spot for the year on the ARIA charts
11. And there was only two Australian entries in the top 10: Guy Sebastian and Kate Miller-Heidke
Guy ranked in number 6 for ‘Like It Like That’ while Kate rounded out the top 10 with ‘Last Day On Earth’.
12. ‘Little Lion Man’ took out the number one spot in the Hottest 100.
13. While four Aussie artists made it into the top 10 of the countdown
Art Vs. Science came in second for ‘Parlez Vous Francais?’, Hilltop Hoods came in third for ‘Chase That Feeling’, Bluejuice came in at 5th place for ‘Broken Leg’ and Lisa Mitchell took out the seventh spot for ‘Coin Laundry’.
