In case you’ve only just crawled outside of some kind of hellmouth, Buffy the Vampire Slayer recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, premiering its pilot episode way back on March 10 in 1997.

Over the past twenty years, the series has cemented itself as not only a cultural phenomenon (and personally my fave show 5eva) but paved the way for the episodic structure of TV, representation of LGBT, and moved forward the inclusion of leading women’s roles on the small screen.

But what the series also effortlessly did was combine the genres of action, horror and comedy. Buffy was a lot of things, but first and foremost: it was simply fucking funny.

So we’ve decided to narrow the series down to its ten funniest episodes, that will convert any Buffy virgin.

While there are obviously phenomenal episodes of Buffy – such as ‘Passion’, ‘The Body’ and ‘Conversations with Dead People’ – these haven’t made the cut because of their serious subject matter.

It’s all about lols here, so with no further ado…

Here’s 10 hilarious episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer everyone should watch at least once:

1. Band Candy (S3 E6)

A classic Buffy ep, which transforms the town’s adults – including Giles, Joyce and Principle Snyder – into teenagers, via chocolatey goodness.

Seeing Giles resort to his old self before he became a watcher is a treat, and then watching him hook up with Buffy’s mum is the cherry on top.

2. Earshot (S3 E18)

Hearing the thoughts of others is a fantasy we’ve all imagined, and it’s a supernatural ability Buffy is gifted with in this ep, after being poisoned from the blood of a mouthless demon.

Being privy to the inner ponderings of all of her friends and teachers is a lot of fun and as per usual, Cordelia is perfection.

3. Pangs (S4 E8)

A personal favourite, ‘Pangs’ is Buffy’s Thanksgiving Day episode and probably includes a bunch of offensive racial stereotypes and cultural appropriation that would never (and should never) fly today.

But still, Xander gets syphilis, Angel returns and Buffy bakes yams. It’s PERF.

4. Something Blue (S4 E9)

This episode is THE BEST. After Willow’s spell goes awry, everything she commands magically comes true.

This includes her saying that Giles is blind, Xander is a ‘demon magnet’ and Buffy and Spike should get married. Obviously, the results are hilarious AF.

5. Hush (S4 E10)

This episode is not only one of the best the series ever produced, and debuts the scariest demons that still haunt my dreams, but it is hysterical.

As the township of Sunnydale’s voices are stolen, the scooby gang have to work out what beastie is the cause, all without being able to speak. Obvs, hilarity ensues.

6. Buffy Vs Dracula (S5 E1)

One of the best features of the series is its self-awareness, in terms of the part the series plays within wider well-worn vampire tropes.

This episode is a spot-on callback to the Dracula mythology and provides plenty of ‘wink-wink’ moments over what we know about vampires on screen.

7. Once More, With Feeling (S6 E7)

No Buffy ‘best of’ list would be complete without the musical episode. It’s just phenomenal. It’s arguably the best musical version a TV series has ever attempted, featuring hilarious (but also rather good) songs, and some actually quality singing (Alyson Hannigan excluded).

Anya’s heavy metal solo about bunnies is actual art, amirite?!

8. Tabula Rasa (S6 E8)

Another classic, and somewhat of a part two to the musical ep. As (another) of Willow’s spells goes wrong, the entire gang forgets who they are, and make up new personas.

After watching it, Anya’s ‘Take it easy Joan,’ will be your go-to ‘stay cool’ mantra.

9. Him (S7 E6)

Season 7 is a dark season, where for the most part, there is very little to laugh about. Except for two notable exceptions.

The first of which is ‘Him’, which finds the gang’s women entranced under a love spell, and fighting over a high school jock – despite Willow, you know, being a lesbian.

10. Storyteller (S7 E16)

Apart from Anya, Andrew is the funniest character the show has even seen and this episode is pure joy.

Following the most likable geek from the trio making a documentary about ‘Buffy, Slayer of the Vampyres’ and the potential slayers efforts to save the world. It’s everything.
