Police say that more than 70 people have been killed, after a truck driver drove through a packed Bastille Day crowd in Nice, France. It’s believed the death toll is set to rise.

There is no confirmation that the attack is terror-related, however police are saying that the driver’s actions were deliberate. President Francois Hollande is calling the attack a “criminal act” and media describing it as a horrific ‘crime’.

Following the crash, there was an exchange of gunfire after the attack and the driver has been killed. Police are currently determining if the driver acted alone or planned his actions with others. RT news has also reported breaking news that weapons & grenades were founds in the vehicle.

Sky News has spoken to Deakin University terrorism expert Greg Barton who told the station that the event had all the hallmarks of a deliberate attack.

Tony Molina, a witness of the tragedy told CNN that the driver of the truck was moving through the crowd at angles, “left to right” at speeds of about 50 kilometres per hour. Malonia said,

“We heard gunshots.”

“We heard several gunshots”.

Facebook has activated its Safety Check for users in Nice, allowing them to tell friends and family they are safe.

The crowd had gathered to watch fireworks for the French national holiday late on Thursday night. The president of the Provence/Alpes/Côte d’Azure region said there are already “more than 70” victims and it’s already being labeled the most deadly tragedy in Nice. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragedy.

What we know

  • The attack happened at around 11.30pm local time while families had gathered to watch fireworks marking the national holiday, Bastille Day.
  • The truck drove at approximately 50km an hour through the crowd. It crushed people across approximately 2 kilometers, according to Le Monde, quoting a prosecutor. The driver drove at angles to maximise the carnage.
  • It’s unknown if gun shots were fired out of the truck during this time, or if these occurred after. RT news reports that weapons, including grenades were found by police in the vehicle after the attack.
  • Multiple people were killed or injured, including families and children, according to Sébastien Humbert, the administrator for the Alpes-Maritimes region
  • Police have told media that at least 70 people are dead and 100 injured (via French news channel BFM-TV)
  • The driver of the truck was killed, Humbert said. It’s believed this occurred in an exchange of gunfire with police.
