This year has seen a solid stream of enthralling true crime shows drop on Netflix, with The Night Stalker and Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel gripping viewers and well, scaring the shit out of them. The latest true crime doco that has people talking is curiously titled Why Did You Kill Me? and it’s got people divided.

The 90-minute doco delves into the 2006 murder of 24-year-old Crystal Theobald in Riverside, California. But this ain’t no regular investigative case, as Crystal’s mum, Belinda Lane, took it upon herself to try to track down the killer. Belinda created fake MySpace profiles to speak with gang members that she suspected were involved, and she even got Crystal’s cousin to pretend to be Crystal when messaging on MySpace. At one stage, Belinda even planned to lure the gang to a location and shoot them herself. Yup, this woman is not OK!

In the end, after over a decade of Belinda and the police chasing leads, William ‘Jokes’ Sotelo eventually pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2020 and was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

The true crime documentary is A LOT and some criticism on Twitter has been levelled at the film for telling a biased account of what happened, relayed largely from the perspective of Belinda, who many viewers didn’t trust as a reliable source. Along with Belinda saying loads of problematic things in her interviews, she also had a tendency to insert herself into conflict and often made things worse.

Why Did You Kill Me? is a frustrating watch and has left people on Twitter equally confused and disturbed.

Firstly, how does the cousin still look so young when she was meant to be a teen in 2006??
