Before the reality series has even seen the light of day, Channel’s Seven Yummy Mummies is already embroiled in controversy.

A petition has been gaining traction for the network to remove the program after one of the series’ stars Maria DiGeronimo made controversial comments about breast-feeding, which screened in the latest promo.

“Breastfeeding in public is illegal, you just don’t do it,” Maria said.

Here’s the video, which features the comment about 40 seconds in:

This statement berating mums that breast-feed in public has not gone over well with viewers. Since the trailer aired, a Change.org petition launched by The Australian Breastfeeding Project by photographer Sarah Murnane, was created calling on Seven to remove the program, or at the very least to not air the offending material in question.

The petition currently has over 20 thousand signatures and warns that Maria’s words are stigmatising breast-feeding.

“The scene enacts 2 women “Yummy Mummies” in a cafe, overlooking a cafe patron breastfeeding, words said by your actors to the effect of “Oh my god, she is breastfeeding, breastfeeding in public is ILLEGAL” (note emphasis on illegal).

“This statement made by your actors is incorrect and discrimination against breastfeeding mothers.”

The petition goes further to say that comments like Maria’s are to blame for why mothers are increasingly choosing to stop breast-feeding, opting for formula instead.

Channel Seven have since post a statement on Facebook, condemning the controversial comments.

“Seven does not sanction the views expressed by those depicted in the program,” the statement said.
