Very rarely do teen movies show anything even close to the reality of being a teen, let alone feature actual teens on screen. Cue Eighth Grade, an actual winner.

Eighth Grade has been praised for giving an actual, realistic picture of modern teens and it has swept up mad reviews at the Sundance Film Festival.

It’s about a thirteen-year-old trying to make it through the awkwardness of her final year middle school before she joins the big kids in high school.

Elsie Fisher stars as Kayla. She’s socially awkward, she vlogs, she has pimples, and she’s had Snapchat since year five. Now THIS is a protagonist we can get around.

The film is Bo Burnham’s directorial debut, who you may know from his vine star days or for his stand-up specials on Comedy Central. Plus it was produced by Scott Rudin who brought us glories like Zoolander and The Royal Tenenbaums.

Eighth Grade honestly just looks like a refreshingly real take on coming into your teen years and getting through school. Keen for it.

Eighth Grade is coming out in the US on July 13th, and we’re still waiting to hear when it will be released in Australia.
