5. Carol

This film should have won all the Oscars this year. Carol is adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel, The Price of Salt, and delves into a lesbian relationship in an age when homosexuality was still taboo. The film revolves around its title character Carol enticing Therese a department store clerk, in incredibly nuanced performances by Cate Blanchette and Rooney Mara.
