Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger

In a recipe for disaster, white actor Johnny Depp was chosen to play the Comanche sidekick Tonto in the film. While Depp has stated that he has some Cherokee or Comanche ancestry, the casting was viewed as offensive by many Native American academics and activists; indicative of Hollywood’s long history of casting white actors in Native American roles.

The film ended up causing a $190 million dollar loss to production house Disney.
