5 underrated series to watch this summer
We all know that feeling: when your favourite series finishes and you start having serious withdrawal symptoms. Or when you catch up with a current series and have to wait a whole week until your next fix. Well, here are five well established series you can smash out until your show comes back.
If you’re up to date with House of Cards and love that sort of serious drama, then this heavily underrated series from BBC is for you. Peaky Blinders tells the story of a gangster family in Birmingham, England right after the first World War. Cillian Murphy (you may know as Scarecrow from the Batman trilogy) plays Tommy Shelby who spearheads the family and takes shit from no one. Jurassic Park’s Sam Niell is the copper who’s vowed against corruption in a battle against Shelby and his brothers. With 3 seasons ready for you to binge on, along with a solid 8.8 rating on IMDB, Peaky Blinders promises a great watch!
With a huge wave of True Detective fans evolving after the latest season, Longmire is a perfect substitute if you’re into creepy cop thrillers. Unfortunately, Robert Taylor doesn’t quite have the sex appeal of Matthew McConaughey or Rachel McAdams, but he certainly takes Walt Longmire’s character and kills it. The recently widowed Sheriff of Absaroka County is, simply put, fucked, but manages to hide his pain under a fedora and the best death you’ll ever see. Four seasons in means you’re set for a while.
On a slightly more upbeat note, Silicon Valley seems to have gone under the radar in Australia. HBO, producing the goods as always, are on song with the story of a group of computer nerds trying to make it in the home of computer engineering: Silicon Valley. With Thomas Middleditch (if you have a sharp movie memory, you’ll know him as the guy whose fish is eaten by Jonah Hill in The Wolf of Wallstreet on “cock sucking mother fucking new issue day!?”) leading the group, this comedy will tickle your fancy if you’re into shows like Modern Family, Community, or Parks and Rec.
Continuing the comedy genre, the first four seasons of VEEP haven’t quite taken off down under. Yet. With the fifth season out in April next year, there’s plenty of time to get up to date. Julia Louis Dreyfus who, no matter how many shows she does, will forever be Elaine from ‘Seinfeld’, is the Vice President of The USA, and soon realises the role is nothing like what she’d hoped, and everything she’d hoped it wouldn’t be. With Gary Cole (who is literally in everything, Entourage, Suits, and The Good Wife) by his side, the shows is absolutely hilarious while running a decent plotline to keep you going.
Finally, a series that had a run on Channel 7 but never kicked on, is The Blacklist. Again, season 3 coming out in September 2015 means there’s a solid amount of time to catch up. Boston Legal’s hilarious James Spader (who played Alan Shore) is Rayond Reddington who’s on the FBI’s most wanted list. He fucks over a new FBI profiler (played by Megan Boone) when he attempts to contact her directly. This edgy thriller will be right up your alley if you’re into your classic CSI or Law and Order, as well as dramas such as Elementary or Homeland.
Hopefully this takes the edge off your withdrawal issues, or at the very least, is another way for you to procrastinate. Nevertheless, there are heaps of ace shows to watch right now, so get going!
