After 5 Years Gangnam Style Has Been Dethroned As YouTube’s Most Viewed Video
It’s the end of an era.
Viral video ‘Gangnam Style’ broke and held the record for most viewed Youtube video for nearly five years. And we are sorry to see it defeated.
You may be asking yourself – ‘how the hell did this video reign YouTube for so long?’ It’s a valid question and the answer is: I’ve got no fucking clue.
Something about the song, the dance, Psy (short for ‘Psycho’ apparently) and the absolutely extra video really stole our hearts. And maybe we lost our minds a little. It was a monumental piece of music that is a core part of our history now, whether we like it or not.
But it is the king of the internet no more. Its reign was brought to an end by the the music video for ‘See You Again’ by Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth. The track is from the Furious 7 soundtrack and the vid takes a sentimental walk down memory lane through The Fast and the Furious films. So apparently our taste has shifted since ‘Gangnam Style’s’ heyday.
When ‘Gangnam Style’ went viral and broke the YouTube record, it unseated Justin Bieber from the #1 spot. Bye bye ‘Baby, Baby, Baby Ohhhh’, hello horse dance.
Fun fact: apparently the signature ‘Gangnam Style’ horse riding dance move was chosen from a few different animal-riding options, including a kangaroo. That was probs ditched when Psy, like the rest of the world, was shook with the harsh reality that we don’t ride kangaroos. Disappointing Aussie myths.
‘Gangnam Style’ is still #1 in our hearts, and maybe with some teamwork we can bring it back to it’s rightful place on the throne…
To celebrate the ‘Gangnam Style’ era let’s also revisit Fitzy and Wippa’s ingenious ‘Aussie Battler Style’. Spot on.
