AGH HEK: The ‘New’ Nokia 3310 Phone Won’t Actually Work In Australia

We hate to be the party poopers to tell you this, but the hype surrounding Nokia’s return with a revamped Nokia 3310 is all in vein. Unfortunately, the ‘brick’ won’t be compatible to send or receive calls or text messages in Australia.

Keeping true to its old-school properties, the latest model uses 2G wireless signal which was switched off across Australia at the end of 2016. With the exception of a few areas where the 2G will be phased out in the next few months, Australian telcos are now using 3G, 4G and now 5G wireless signals. Never before has technological advancement been so disappointing.

The good news is that you’ll still be able to play Snake – which let’s face it, is probably the only reason you’re interested in buying it anyway.

The phone was launched at the Mobile World Congress overnight in Barcelona by HMD (the new owner of Nokia phones) and seems to have caught the eye of many frustrated smartphone users. Especially because it has a battery which can last one full month while in standby. Yep – you read that right – 30 days without a single charge. Take that iPhone.

It also features a colour screen, a camera, a microSD card slot and even the ability to play MP3s. For a steal at less than $70AUD it’s great value. Here’s a promo shot showing the serious 2017 upgrade:

The new Nokia 3310 model

IMO, at that price, the Nokia 3310 could actually be the perfect travel buddy. With 2G still active across most of Europe, Asia and the United States, this phone could be really effective way to remain contactable while out and about without your apps soaking up your data. Treat ‘yo self.
