There’s nothin’ like the classics.

After a million format reincarnations like X-Factor, American’s Got Talent and The Voice, good ol’ fashurn American Idol is about to stage its comeback. Better yet, Katy Perry has just been confirmed as the first judge.

Love her or hate her, she’s likely to say all sorts of weird stuff that’s going to make for good viewing when it hits screens towards the end of this year.

Again, we’ll get to see a bunch of pimply hopeful kids belt out ballads in an attempt to be the next Kelly Clarkson (season one winner), Carrie Underwood (season four winner) or Jordan Sparks (season six). Better yet, it’s all about the car-crash auditions that bring American crazies out of the woodwork.

The show, which was owned and run by Fox was dropped after a massive 15 seasons and is coming back to the ABC, so it’s unclear how or if the format will adapt to compete with all the other talent shows sucking up the airwaves.

ABC made an industry announcement this morning and Perry didn’t waste any time celebrating the news, chucking up this emoji riddled tweet saying: “SO thrilled @ABCNetwork is bringing back @AmericanIdol, and I’m bringing it back to the ?MUSIC? ? you at auditions❗”

In the official, emoji-less statement, Perry told the media:

“I am honoured and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the ‘American Idol’ tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories. I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough – from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”

There have been no whispers of an Aussie Idol comeback, but we for one would be totally down for it. Imagine reuniting Osher and James Mathison to bring us the next big success stories…like… ahh…err… Shannon Noll, Cosima De Vito, Wes Carr, Stan Walker and Damien Leith.
