Not To Be Dramatic, But I Actually Can’t Go A Day Without Playing ‘Among Us’
As you know, meeting up with friends and family during the COVID-19 pandemic has been hard. As a result, one online game has kept my social life alive – and that’s Among Us.
By now, I’m sure you’ve all heard of Among Us. Whether you’ve seen it pop up on TikTok or you’ve watched AOC play it on Twitch, Among Us has cemented itself into the pandemic’s discourse – and for good reason. It’s literally the best game ever.
Among Us getting so big you could say its HumongUs

What is Among Us?
If you don’t know how it works, here’s a very brief run-down: Think of Among Us as a cross between the real-life game Mafia and the board-game Cluedo. It’s a game of survival that requires some serious detective skills.
In a nutshell, the game asks a group of 10 players to work together as a crew and complete their tasks. However, within the group of crewmates, there are a number of ‘imposters’. Now, the goal of the imposters is to pick off crew members one-by-one until they outnumber them. And the goal of the ‘crewmates’ is to finish their tasks and/or vote out the imposter. Throughout the game, there are a number of meetings, where the players discuss who has been acting suspiciously and subsequently who needs to be voted out.
I know this all sounds a bit confusing, but trust me it’s super fun.
For some essential context, I was never a gamer. I was always the kid who picked out Singstar or Eye Toy whenever I was blessed with an EB Games visit. Regardless of this fact, I have found that Among Us has completely taken over my life throughout the past few months, and I think I’ve worked out the reasons why.
Why is it so addictive?
Firstly, Among Us is a phenomenal way of staying in contact with your loved ones. It’s become very clear to me that games are the best way of staying in touch with your friends and family during the pandemic. When we were all in lockdown, it almost felt silly to call a friend/acquaintance to ask what they got up to, knowing full well they didn’t leave the house at all. Enter: the idea of an online games night.
And sure you can play online Pictionary or Mario Kart, but I found Among Us to be the best game of them all because it relied on speaking to each other on the phone and having that human contact. Here, it really felt like I was getting the social interaction I needed without the chat delving into old, boring routines of COVID-19 conversation.
Secondly, I feel like Among Us was a way of getting to know yourself better. The game literally forces you to murder your friends and then lie about it during interrogation. Are you someone who is good at lying? Or are you like me and have a literal panic attack when you’re put in the situation? This game tests your limits and takes you into new territories. And for that, we have no choice but to stan.
among us is making me learn new things about myself like the fact I love lying and murder

Who knew that a game revolved around killing others could be so relatable?

Thirdly, I feel that Among Us is a phenomenal way of getting to know your friends better. Did you know your friends were that good at lying? No, you did not. Do you look at them differently now that you know they’re extremely good at it? Yes, of course, you do.
