Anne Aly is to become the first female Muslim MP in Australia and it’s no coincidence that her appointment to Parliament coincides with the return of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party.

Australia stands at a point where our growing diversity is leading to increasing resentment and fear-mongering from the far right.

With One Nation estimated to win three seats, including for the party’s leader Hanson, some of the parties policies include calling for a ‘Royal Commission into Islam’, seeking to stop Muslim immigration and refugee intake, and to ban Halal certification.

Last week, Dr Aly said the election of Hanson would create an opportunity for “transparent discussions” about Islamic extremism, and added that she wasn’t afraid to challenge her.

“I don’t mind standing up and talking with Pauline Hanson about issues to do with Islamic extremism, but let them be informed and let them respectful and let them be based on facts,” she told Sky News.

We think Aly could definitely teach Hanson and thing or two about Islam – maybe a tad more in-depth than Wikipedia searches.
