Avril Lavigne Wants To Adapt ‘Sk8er Boi’ Into A Film And We As A Society Should Let Her

Avril Lavigne has revealed she wants to turn her iconic song ‘Sk8er Boi’ into a film for its twentieth anniversary. Yep, that’s right, the song is almost 20 years old.

With the last couple of years seeing a revival of pop-punk, Lavigne has been making a comeback. Earlier this year, she collaborated with Willow on Willow’s pop-punk album, Lately, I feel everything, and went viral in a TikTok featuring Tony Hawk as, well, the titular Sk8er Boi.

Now on IHeartRadio’s She Is The Voice podcast, the millennial icon was being interviewed about coming of age as a teen rock star, and her new collaboration with Blink 182’s Travis Barker. Host Lisa Worden then asked Avril for her thoughts on the hit that made her, ‘Sk8er Boi’.

Levigne tells Lisa how difficult it was to get even get ‘Sk8er Boi’ produced in the first place. “That was not easy at that time,” she recalled. “It was like pulling teeth. Half of it was because I was this little girl in the studio talking to these big producers for the first time.

“But I think at the time, that sound wasn’t even happening. That was what was different about it and maybe even why it worked.”

On the topic of the twentieth anniversary, Avril Lavigne got a little coy. “It keeps getting brought back up and people always reference it to me, and I’m actually going to turn this song into a film and take it to the next level.”

Sadly, she doesn’t elaborate on when we could expect a ‘Sk8er Boi’ film — but hey, at least we already know the plot.

“The skater boy is in love with the preppy girl and she’s too cool for him but then five years from now she’s feeding the baby and she’s all alone and she wishes she would have followed her heart and not tried to live up to society’s expectations,” Lavigne helpfully explained on the podcast, in case anyone has forgotten.

It’s not the first time ‘Sk8er Boi’ has been tipped to become a feature. Back in 2003, Billboard reported that Paramount Pictures hired ER writer David Zabel to adapt the song into a movie. As we all know, that never came to pass.

Here’s hoping our favourite pop-punk princess has better luck manifesting a ‘Sk8er Boi’ film in 2022.
