Well, well, well…

Things seem to be going from bad to worse for Katy Perry. From her flailing music career, to her recent super awks appearance on Saturday Night Live and the Billboard Music Awards. The one thing Katy had going for her, is that she has the largest Twitter following.

It was her one achievement, and no one could take that away from her. But wait…turns out it’s actually one big fat lie.

A push to assess the authenticity of Twitter account followers started after Donald Trump’s account was found to have a suspicious amount of bots following the POTUS. A handy database TwitterAudit.com was developed to check what percentage of a Twitter account followers are legit.

This is where Katy has been exposed. U.S news organisation Newsweek fed her account into the website and found that 66.9 million of her 99.2 million followers are fake – that’s 68 percent of her fanbase. WTAF?!

Tbh, even the likes of Justin Bieber and Barack Obama have a large percentage of bot followers. It’s likely just a consequence of having an insane level of following.

But just to add extra spice to this already tasty AF story, taking away the fake accounts, it turns out that Taylor Swift – Katy’s arch nemesis – is actually the most followed person on Twitter. If that’s not poetic justice, I don’t know what is?
