Last night’s episode of Bachelor In Paradise was full of surprises as Jake Ellis chose to leave the show to pursue his ex-girlfriend Megan Marx, who he met on the first season.

The shocking move left viewers wondering if Jake and Megan got back together following his short stint on the reality show. I feel no shame in the fact that I immediately checked both their Instagrams after the episode and have been checking back hourly — but still nothing?! Neither have commented on their relationship on social media.

We simply had to speak to Jake to find out what happened with Megan and to chat about his time on the Bachelor In Paradise.

On contacting Megan after leaving paradise:

“As soon as I got back to Sydney from Fiji, yes I did call her. I told her a little bit and we caught up for dinner. We are still spending time with each other, it’s still a ‘wait and see what happens’ situation and we’ll just take it as it comes. We have made some mistakes in the past that we don’t want to do again.

“But I can tell you that we’ve watched the last few episodes together and it’s been amazing. She laughed and definitely smiled [after watching Jake’s speech last night] and she thought it was very special and pretty beautiful. So I hope that gave me some brownie points.”

On their relationship status:

“I wouldn’t put a label on it. We just care deeply for each other, we’re each other’s best friend and that’s something we just want to continue to grow on. We’ve broke up a few times and we’ve both made some mistakes and that’s not something either of us want to relive.”

On why he chose to leave paradise:

“I think I went in with the best intentions to really put myself back out there. Obviously, Megan and I hadn’t been together for quite some time and I had such a great experience [the first time] so I wanted to see if it could work again. But when I had my date with Helena, I started to realise that what I had [with Megan] was really quite special. I started to realise that more and more each day in the lead up to that rose ceremony.”

On whether he regrets coming back on the show:

“I went on to put myself back out there and in turn I ended up realising that I was still in love and what I had was really special. I can’t regret something like that. Out of the three seasons I’ve done — The Bachelorette, Bachelor In Paradise and then the season I just left — I’ve always learnt something.”

On not supporting friendship roses:

“It’s not that I hate friendship roses, but there was a lot of lead up to that night and there was a lot of people saying ‘I’ll give you a rose, if you give me a rose and we’ll keep doing that until the end of the show.’ That’s not the point of it and that’s just them taking advantage of a free holiday. The whole point of giving a rose is to take a chance or make a statement.”

On who is in paradise for the right reasons:

“I think Glenn 100%, Brittney Weldon who is probably my favourite of the entire cast and the whole show. She is honestly a legend and she deserves the best. Alisha and Brittany Hockley too and Mary.”

On whether he will ever go on BIP again:

“No. I’m definitely done. I’ve done my stint for this franchise. I’ve been very fortunate from what I’ve learnt and what’s come from it. I’ll always be thankful for it but I’ll never do it again. Unless there’s a Bachelor Masters and I’m in my mid-fifties.”

Bachelor In Paradise returns Sunday night at 7:30pm on Channel 10.
