When I was a kid, I would hit the fallen pears from our pear tree around our backyard with a tennis racket. I loved the squishy sound it made, and on top of that, the tennis racquet practically sliced the pear if I swung hard enough. I was blowing off steam and no one was getting hurt. In fact I think the local birds loved how much easier it was to access fruit in our garden.

A new pop up in the trendaayy Melbourne suburb of Brunswick called The Break Room offers a those in need of a break (and possibly a kit-kat) a way to blow off some steam. You can smash as many things as you want with a baseball bat and it’s totally cool, in fact, it’s encouraged.

The Break Room was born when Ed Hunter realised that everybody wanted to blow off steam in their own way. Some peeps might want to smash out a circuit at the gym, but The Break Room is inviting you to smash some crockery instead.

Ah, to be young and able to break things.

The Break Room is currently housed behind coffee house Kines in Brunny; the building was originally a shoe warehouse but now it is the ultimate break house. Break for coffee and then break some shit yourself!

There is some science to the activity. For example, the pink that is used to colour the baseball bats is a coloured called Baker-Miller; it’s been used in correctional facilities around the US to help calm violent inmates. Creator of The Break Room, Hunter, believe that the goal of the pop-up isn’t to promote violence; but rather to reduce stress, to harness destructive urges in a controlled and fun way.

Unfortunately, this activity is pretty pricey for most people. To be able to be a super smash bro/gal, one must be willing to spend 50 dollarydoos for 5 minutes of smash time.

The Break Room is located behind Kines at 11 Hope Street, Brunswick. It’s open every day from 3pm onwards. Check out thebreakroom.com.au for more info.
