Celebrities With Makeup Lines Genuinely Worth Spending Your Cash On
“Shine bright like a diamond,” sang Rihanna in ‘Diamonds‘. Then, conveniently, she gave us a whole range of Killawatt highlighters so that we could all look like crystal-smothered actress-model-musicians.
Rihanna’s Fenty line was a game-changer, initially offering 40 shades of foundation (now 50) when for so long, cosmetics had convinced us “nude skin” was one of three to 12 shades maximum. She’s far from the first celebrity to put their name to a beauty product, but she’s proven to be a hands-on businesswoman and creator, regularly posting tutorials to Instagram and engaging with her fans via social media.
With other celebs like Kat Von D and The Kardashians also holding a stake in the makeup world there’s plenty of choices out there now from our fave celebs. In particular, Kylie Jenner’s line has won rave reviews and won over sceptics. Her lip kits regularly sell out and I can honestly say the only woman I’ve ever stopped in the street to inquire about her lip colour was wearing Kylie.
As someone who can’t see their own toothbrush behind boxes, columns and marvellous glowing pyramids of makeup, I feel well equipped to divide the gold from the garbage here.
So get your credit cards on the ready – here are the celebrity makeup lines worth your every cent.
Fenty
Fenty Beauty joined the likes of Apple’s iPhone X, Tesla Model 3 and NASA’s spacecraft Insight to be named Time magazine’s list of the 25 best inventions of 2017 thanks to the sell-out appeal of the Pro Filt’r Foundation. Fenty has been championed by the LGBTQI community, with Instagram stars Kway and actor Daniel Kaluuya both wearing the brand’s foundation.
If you’re only going to buy three things, make them the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation, Mattemoiselle Lipstick and Killawatt Highlighter (latest shade Wattabrat is a baby pink shimmer, or go for gold, literally, with Trophy Wife).
Kat Von D
Tattoo artist, vegan, celebrity reality TV show star, pin-up and businesswoman, Kat Von D could have released sub-quality products and sailed on by with great packaging and a unique personality and fierce reputation for edgy beauty. Thankfully, she didn’t.
Her Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks have earned cult status amongst makeup artists and beauty junkies alike. Lolita is a sell-out thanks to its universally flattering shade, while Tattoo Liner achieves a scalpel-sharp line that creates a devastatingly luxe cat’s eye (if you use a mirror and avoid excessive coffee or tequila before application). The studded kiss lipsticks are an artwork, with black studded bullet casing that just radiates punk-rock-disco-queen vibes and deserves hourly reapplications, just for the satisfaction of showing it off.
BECCA x Khloe
“Those Kardashians, always hiding their lights under bushels!” said nobody, ever. Once Kim and Kylie had established their makeup lines and proved their fans are more than willing to shell out to look like Kardashian Klones, it was only a matter of time before Khloe ventured into the makeup space.
Rather than going out on her own though, she joined forces with BECCA to offer a select range of products. BECCA has previously teamed with Chrissy Teigen, a partnership that resulted in sell-out highlighters that had YouTube makeup reviewers in raptures. The bar was certainly set high. Get your manicured talons on the XO shaped highlighter cubes or the covetable lipsticks in audacious reds or just-been-kissing nude shades.
OUAI
Ouai is the haircare line belonging to celeb hairstylist, Jen Atkin.
Hair stylists have emerged from behind the manes of their celebrity clientele to market and promote their own hairstyling and hair colour brands. Jen Atkin became a well-known name after appearing in Snapchats along with her celeb clients.
Besides being entrusted with the glossy locks of every Kardashian sister, Atkin has styled Chrissy Teigen, Jenna Dewan Tatum and more. Her own glossy, perfectly wavy beach hair is more than enough reason to take a lunchtime break that involves visiting Sephora.
ModelCo x Karl Lagerfeld
First things first: RIP to the legendary icon of style and fashion, Karl Lagerfeld. Karl was always ahead of the field and has proven it in this collaboration. In partnering with ModelCo on a playful line of cosmetics and accessories, he included his own face and that of his beloved cat, Choupette, on eyeshadow palettes, makeup brushes, lip glosses and mascaras.
The brand had already proven its credibility in the game with mascaras containing mirrors and in-built lights and celebrity ambassadors such as Dannii Minogue and Jennifer Hawkins. Combining forces with a European fashion legend was a no-brainer. Add to cart, stat.
