This year, in movie terms, is off to a brilliant start with Mean Girls (the musical and the movie) bitch-slapping the box office, raking in over AUD$2.76 million already. And that’s off the back of a solid 2023 in film – just take a look at the best movies of 2023 to prove my point.

But, guys, there are so many excellent films coming in 2024 that you need to start getting excited about.

So you can prep your eyeballs for the greatness ahead, here are the five movies on their way this year that precisely everyone will be talking about.

Dune: Part Two

Yes, the movie with the bright blue eyes and buckets of sand is back! Dune (Part One) was a massive success, locking in Timothée Chalamet as a bonafide leading dude. However, the second installment of the series will see more of a leading role for Zendaya (who we didn’t see enough of in Part One).

Dune: Part Two will also star massive names like Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, and Austin Butler, and I can’t wait.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Okay, I’m not usually a Ghostbusters girlie, but the trailer for this movie looks SO GOOD. The premise for this film is that a deep, deadly freeze takes over New York City in the height of summer – bringing a creepy giant ghost with it. While elements look scary, the cast is comedy gold (hello Paul Rudd and James Acaster), so you know it will bring the laughs too.

Challengers

Who doesn’t feel a love triangle playing out on screen?! This particular one is more complicated than most. There are no spoilers here, but the premise is that Zendaya is a tennis prodigy everyone fancies and has a bit of a fling with two other up-and-coming players. She eventually marries and coaches, but their triangle returns to the court when her ex-boyfriend becomes his biggest rival.

While I couldn’t give less of a stuff about the tennis side of things, this cast is good, and the courtside looks that Zendaya is serving up in Challengers are delicious.

Back to Black

Biopics have been very popular of late, and it looks like things aren’t slowing down as a massive one is dropping in 2024. Back to Black maps out the life of Amy Winehouse, and it seems not to be holding back when it comes to showing the dark side of her days. I will be queuing this one up, not necessarily because I want to see what the movie portrays but because there will be so much conversation surrounding this film.

Joker: Folie à Deux

The limit does not exist when it comes to superhero and villain movies, and 2024 will bring another one to our eyeballs in the form of Joker: Folie à Deux. This story supposedly starts with the Joker imprisoned in the Arkham State Hospital, where he meets Dr. Harleen Quinzel. If that name feels familiar, it’s because once she falls for the Joker and the two become a crime-tastic double act, she’s better known as (you guessed it) Harley Quinn.

Joaquin Phoenix is reprising his role as the Joker, Lady Gaga is playing Harley Quinn, and rumors are swirling that this movie may be musical. Yep, it’s an all-singing, all-dancing villain origin tale. I can’t wait to see them bring out the tap shoes.
