A basketball World Cup qualifying game in Bulacan between Australia’s Boomers and the Philippines came to an early end on Monday, after a massive brawl between players, staff and fans from both teams broke out on the court.

The fight started towards the end of the third quarter, after Philippines guard Roger Ray Pogoy hit Australia’s Chris Goulding with his elbow. Goulding’s teammate Daniel Kickert retaliated with an elbow of his own, and within seconds the scuffle escalated into a full-blown melee.

At one point, Boomer Thon Maker tried to high-kick a Philippines player, while Nathan Sobey was on the wrong end of a chair.

Yes, a chair.

Security officials eventually broke up the fight, and the game was suspended for 30 minutes while referees assessed the situation. Nine players from the Philippines, along with four from Australia, were ultimately ejected, leaving the home team with just three players on the court.

The game was called off after the remaining Philippines players fouled themselves out, with Australia declared the winner 89-53.

In a statement following the brawl, Basketball Australia chief executive Anthony Moore condemned the incident and said that the Boomers would accept the consequences.

“Basketball Australia deeply regrets the incident in tonight’s match between the Boomers and the Philippines in Manila,” he said. “We are extremely disappointed with what happened and our role in it.”

“This is not the spirit in which sport should be played and certainly not in the spirit in which we aim to play basketball. We apologise to our fans and will await the penalties to be handed down.”
