This comes several weeks after a hostage situation on board an EgyptAir flight, where a man held a plane hostage with fake explosives.

UPDATE – 4:01pm

  • The missing plane is 13 years old.
  • The plane dropped off the radar around 16km inside Egypt’s airspace.
  • The airline says no distress calls were made & there were no reports of bad weather.
  • EgyptAir have confirmed that the Egyptian military are still conducting their search. It is believed that the plane crashed at sea.
  • EgyptAir have recently listed the nationalities of the passengers – there are no Australians reported to have been on-board.

UPDATE – 4:35pm

  • Egyptian officials have confirmed the flight has crashed
  • France has set up a crisis unit led by President Hollande
  • Reports are circulating that an Egyptian military unit received a distress signal from the plan – over an hour and a half after the plane disappeared from radar.

UPDATE – 7:51am (Friday, May 20)

  • After earlier claims from EgyptAir that they had found the wreckage belonging to MS804, the company retracted the comment as Airline vice-president Ahmed Adel told CNN, “we stand corrected”
  • Egyptian, French, Greek and US forces are looking for the wreckage
  • Egypt’s aviation minister Sherif Fathy said terrorism was more likely than technical failure
  • However, no group has claimed responsibility for downing the aircraft
