Netflix’s breakout cheerleading series Cheer is back for another season — but this time around it’s not all about team spirit.

Unlike the relatively simple first season, the much darker Season 2 was divided into two parts: pre-COVID and post-COVID. This left the nine new episodes feeling disjointed, but no less drama-packed.

Beginning in 2020, Navarro still had the likes of faves Lexi Brumback and Morgan Simianer on the team, as they prepared for the NCA College Nationals at Daytona, but before the competition could commence, the pandemic halted it completely. Cheerleading practice stopped and when everyone was able to safely return in 2021, the team lost Lexi and Morgan as they had since graduated.

A highly publicised controversy that came over the break involved former Cheer fave Jerry Harris, who was charged with the production of child pornography in September 2020. The season didn’t shy away from addressing what Jerry was accused of, dedicating an episode to giving his alleged victims the chance to share their harrowing stories.

The new season also brought a new dynamic with rival team Trinity Valley Community College featured throughout the docuseries. The team had a totally different energy to Navarro, with former cheerleader Vontae Johnson at the helm as head coach, supported by Khris Franklin as assistant coach. What Trinity may have lacked in polish and sass on the stage, they made up for in skill — featuring some truly impressive tumblers, namely viral sensation Angel Rice and not-a-cheerleader, DeVonte ‘Dee’ Joseph.

While Angel took cheerleading in her stride, Dee struggled to perform with enthusiasm in Trinity’s routines — he straight-up refused to smile out of fear he might come across as, umm… gay. Dee even said in one episode that he decided not to join Navarro, as he found that the men in the team were too effeminate. Dee was referring to how the men on Navarro slay the whole damn house down every time they perform, which obviously shouldn’t have anything to do with gender — they’re just giving their all in order to win. Dee’s confession showed an ugly yet pervasive side of cheerleading, which sadly remains a damaging stereotype about male cheerleaders.

The season brought up a lot of complex issues that the original six episodes stayed far away from, so while it may have been harder to watch, it also shed important light on how poverty, race, and how the expectations of masculinity affect young people in America’s southern states.

The new episodes also grappled with how the instant fame that some of the Navarro cheerleaders and staff faced from Season 1 had changed their everyday lives. Some cheerleaders became influencers, or started doing advertising for different brands. Head coach Monica Aldama took time off coaching to become a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, leading to increased tension with La’Darius Marshall, who ended up quitting the team before the 2021 national championships.

In short, this season was A LOT. And the memes are too accurate.
