The Most Common Words People Use When Talking To Dogs Have Been Revealed
Words by Dom Hone.
People talking to their pets in goofy voices is something that will outlast religion.
Even the most stone-hearted individuals can find themselves gushing at the very sight of their pooch bounding down the hallway.
Of course, it doesn’t matter that we’re the only ones actually speaking; as long as our canine friends are there, tongues out and tails wagging, it feels just as and often more exciting than talking to some of the humans in our life.
In a recent study conducted at Barnard College’s Dog Cognition Lab, researchers Alexandra Horowitz and Julie Hecht looked at 187 videos of people from a variety of backgrounds and ages playing with their dogs. They compiled a list of the words most commonly used by people when talking to their dogs. Interestingly, the list did not include the words “pragmatism”, “conservatorium”, “variance”, or “ideology”, but did include “yay”, “boy”, “good” and “gimme”.

While all this may not seem earth-shatteringly surprising, the researchers’ broader aim is to help add to the growing scientific literature on human-canine interaction, which in turn could help scientists learn more about how dogs can be used as service or support animals. And that is always a great thing. What are you waiting for? Your dog is itching for a chin wag.
