As we continue the trend of rebooting everything that was vaguely popular in the 90s and noughties, 2002 surfing classic Blue Crush is getting the TV reboot treatment. Err…cowabunger?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC is developing a TV drama based on the film, which brought lady surfers to the silver screen, celebrating female friendship without the women spilling out of teeny bikinis created purely for dudes to gawk at.

The popular film made a star of actresses Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriquez. While the film’s stars haven’t said yet whether they’ll return, Lizzy Weiss, who co-wrote the film is back writing and executive producing the series. The original film’s producer Brian Grazer is also co-producing.

The gang’s back together!

This TV reboot will essentially follow the same plot as the film. In the series, a surfer will work to revive her career after suffering from an accident, all while, you know, trying to not die from the crashing waves of doom.

THR said the adaption came about as reboots stay in “high demand,” with producers more likely to want to tap into an established fandom rather than create something original. In the case of Blue Crush, we’re keen AF.
