Due to lockdown restrictions, many hair salons aren’t open – or if they are they aren’t able to do long appointments – which means for the unnatural blondes out there, your dark roots are likely out of control right now.

If you have blonde hair but are naturally darker, your hair probably currently looks like this:

I feel your pain. I’m a brunette who dyes her hair blonde, and even worse I happen to have a fringe and right now, my fringe is practically all brown. I look like an upside-down block of Cadbury Top Deck: it’s quite the lewk.

Honestly, at the moment we’re all bored and restless as hell after enduring so many weeks in lockdown, and the last thing we need is to look in the mirror and be reminded of (*shudders*) our natural hair colour (mine is a brassy brown with orange undertones).

So what the hell are we supposed to do if our roots are now as dark as our thoughts?

Thankfully, there are a few ways to help hide dark roots, and they’re surprisingly simple.

We spoke to hairdresser and Revlon Professional Blonde Ambassador, Rhiannon Dimaria, who imparted some wisdom on ways to hide your godawful dark roots:

Add Volume

Get that hair BIG!! “Textured waves are a go here, the more volume, the better! It lifts the hair off the scalp and gives the illusion that the roots aren’t as long as they seem and blends them as such,” Rhiannon said.

“Post washing, spray in some Revlon Professional Style Masters California Days Glory waves, flip your head upside down and give it a good shake through the roots with your fingertips. This lifts all that hair off your roots as it dries (you could even give it a short blast through the roots with the hairdryer if you are in a hurry).

“When your halfway dry, smooth over the hair with a serum, in a ‘spirit fingers’ soft touch motion over the mids and ends to control the frizz even further, and add some shine. This BIG HAIR ENERGY will take the focus off the roots.”

Braid It Up

Distract from your roots with some braiding. “Braids are MADE for roots. They actually look better with a bit of variation in the colour as they make the braids stand out! Try learning by practising a Dutch braid, once you get the hang of these you won’t be able to stop! The cascading of colours bring the braid to life and create dimension.”

Slick It Back

“Brunettes and darker bases can get away with a slick look. The thing we want here is a wet look, as it makes your hair appear darker overall and will blend the regrowth line in with the remainder of the hair. Try something like this on your last day before you are washing for a different look.

“For fine hair textures or super straight hair, start with slightly damp hair and apply Revlon Professional Style Masters Creator Defining Gel, comb in and tuck back into a low pony or sleek bun to complete the look.

“For medium to thicker styles of hair with a bit of texture, I prefer to use more of a wax/oil combination as the gel can make your curls go wild (which is also an option). Start by drenching your hair with Revlon’s UNIQ1 Leave-in Treatment, which will also give you the added benefit of giving it a good drink, comb through then run over with some fibre wax and a smoothing hydrating oil, such as a split ends serum to lock that moisture in! Slick back and style as usual.”

Use A Brow Pencil

“A simple yet brilliant trick is to use an eyebrow pencil to give yourself a root shadow, or blend in greys or blend out that harsh regrowth line. Make sure it is the waxy type and stroke through different variants of length and width, not touching your scalp too much for a natural feel.

“You can give yourself a root shadow or a lived-in look or pick out your greys and literally colour them over, risk-free. The wax from the pencil gives control over where you are placing it. This is what I have been doing to myself during ISO!”

Follow these tips until you can find time to actually leave your house and see your hairdresser. And please for the love of god, step away from the bleach!!
