Over the weekend season two of Dirty John dropped on Netflix and I know what y’all are thinking? How is that possible considering the way the first season concluded. Well, it turns out the series has returned with a different story and this time it’s a double murder.

Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story relays the infamous case of Betty Broderick (duh), a divorced housewife who killed her ex-husband, Dan Broderick, and his new wife, Linda, in 1989. Each episode focuses on a stage in Betty and Dan’s life together before the murder: first meeting, then having four kids while Dan studied to be a doctor and then a lawyer, before Dan hired Linda as his law firm’s assistant and then divorced Betty.

Set mostly in the ’80s, the bonkers fashion is enough reason to watch.

I binged the first three episodes last night and let me tell you: this series is deeply unnerving and dark. Amanda Peet in the role of Betty is pure chaos, while Christian Slater fits into the smug shoes of manipulative Dan a little too well.

It’s a slow start but deeply addictive once it gets going and shines an important light on the ways women are gaslit, coerced and controlled in toxic relationships.
