Despite being the well-spoken, confident and relaxed dude that he is, Ed Sheeran once had a debilitating stutter.

Speaking overnight at the American Institute for Stuttering’s Free Voices Changing Lives Benefit Gala, Sheeran revealed that one person was particularly helpful in his fight to overcome his speech impediment.

“My Uncle Jim told my dad that Eminem was the next Bob Dylan — it’s pretty similar, it’s all just storytelling — so my dad bought me The Marshall Mathers LP when I was nine years old, not knowing what was on it. I learned every word of it, back to front, by the time I was ten. He raps very fast and melodically and percussively, and it helped me get rid of the stutter.”

It’s clear that Eminem’s influence goes well beyond fixing his stutter, with fast, melodic rapping being a regular feature in Sheeran’s trademark songs.

The 24 year-old ‘A-Team‘ singer also used his speech to tell the audience, “Embrace your quirks. Being weird is a wonderful thing….There’s no one in the world that can be a better you than you.” Uplifting stuff!

Among the other guests was Hollywood actress, Emily Blunt who was also honoured at the event.
