Amy Schumer has teamed up with her cousin Chuck Schumer, the Democratic senator from New York to speak out against America’s gun control laws (or lack thereof) at a press conference overnight.

The Trainwreck star and outrageous comedian traded her tongue in cheek attitude for a rarely seen raw and emotional tone as she contributed to the public debate. It comes in the wake of a cinema shooting in Louisiana that killed three people and wounded nine while her film was screening last month.

[blockquote author=”Amy Schumer” pull=”normal”]”These are my first public comments on the issue of gun violence, but I promise you they will not be my last,”[/blockquote]

Chuck Schumer and Amy are calling for universal background checks for people seeking to buy guns in America. A small step, but a giant leap.

Appearing together at the press conference, the Schumers showed their support for a joint strike that would see Congressional support for legislation that provides financial incentives for states that contributed data to a national background check system and penalties for those that did not, and reform and increase funding to mental health services,

[blockquote author=”Amy Schumer” pull=”normal”]”We’re here today to say enough is enough, to mass shootings in our schools, our college campuses, our military bases, and even in our movie theatres. These shootings have got to stop,” said Amy.[/blockquote]

It’s going to be interesting to see how the debate around gun control in the US plays out in the lead up to the to the country’s 2016 presidential election.
