‘Everything Sucks!’ Is The Latest Netflix Teen Show Everyone Is Getting Around
Netflix’s latest addition to the nostalgic teen show canon is Everything Sucks! and after one weekend it’s already got a whole lot of fans.
If you haven’t heard, Everything Sucks! is Netflix’s latest release. It’s a high school comedy set in 1996 in Boring, Oregon (legit, an actual town). It’s full of all that 90’s nostalgia with sweet throwbacks to music and fashion of the time, plus an ace cast and great script.
After one episode you’ll be ready to join the give-us-a-season-two campaign.
While there’s no shortage of TV shows about teens out there, the genre still has a way to go when it comes to representation.
Instead of showing us the same kinds of teens and experiences we are so used to seeing reproduced over and over again on screen, Everything Sucks! is raking in adoration for exploring some fresh narratives that desperately need attention.
Instead of following the problematic black-best-friend trope, the show’s protagonist is a young black freshman who seems to be equal parts nerdy and suave. He quickly slots in as an AV club nerd as he tries to navigate the social circles of high school and pursue the girl he likes. Which brings us to our leading lady, whose story is as much about coming out as it is coming of age.
“Everything Sucks” on Netflix is a Gay Anthem™, thank you.

It’s an endearing look into the lives of high school kids who are all social outliers in the same way as our fave teens from Stranger Things and Freaks and Geeks. Plus, instead of casting a bunch of 25-going-on-30-year-olds to play the high schoolers, like so many shows before have done, the teens of Everything Sucks!, including our stars Jahi Winston and Peyton Kennedy, were pretty much all born in the 2000s – making them actual teens. Revolutionary!!!
Jump on board the Everything Sucks! binge-watching train to enjoy the too-real teen awkwardness, an all-star 90s soundtrack and a generally good time.
