As news ripples through the world, that we have lost another musical genius in the untimely death of Prince aged 57, musicians have stepped up to speak about how the artist influenced their careers.

Frank Ocean has payed tribute to Prince and the impact he had not only with Ocean’s approach to music, but his own struggles with his sexual identity a black man.

While Ocean has stepped away from the spotlight since his transcendent debut album channel ORANGE, after the shocking news that music legend and pop icon Prince passed away, the singer quickly took to his Tumblr to reflect on Prince’s influence on him.

Ocean discussed his own sexuality, explaining that studying Prince helped Ocean feel “more comfortable with how he identified sexually simply by Prince’s display of freedom from and irreverence for obviously archaic ideas like gender conformity”.
