Courtney Cox Finally Recreated “The Routine” From ‘Friends’ With *Checks Notes* Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many Friends scenes that are funnier than “The Routine”.
What’s the routine, some uncultured swine might ask? The hilarious moment comes about when Joey’s girlfriend, Janine, gets Ross and Monica a spot on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin‘ Eve. The siblings worry that they’re not getting enough camera attention, so out of desperation, they decide to break out “The Routine”.
It’s an iconic scene, watch it for yourself below:
The scene, which first aired in 1999, is perfection. Clearly feeling all nostalgic from Friends: The Reunion airing, Courtney Cox has recreated the dance with her mate, you may know him, his name is Ed Sheeran. This might seem like a random pairing, but Courtney and Ed are old friends, with Ed even introducing Courtney to her fiancé, Johnny McDaid.
Courtney recruited Ed to give “The Routine” a 2021 take — and they’re truly pulling it off!

While we’re obviously thrilled to see the dance recreated, we can’t help but wonder why it didn’t happen at the reunion and with David instead of Ed. Well, apparently reunion director Ben Winston asked them to do it, but Courtney and David said they couldn’t remember the dance. “They just couldn’t remember it. I don’t think they wanted to dance in front of that studio. They’re like, ‘Don’t make us dance in front of a crowd of people,’” he told The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast.
“It’s one thing doing it when you’re playing Ross and Monica. It’s another thing when everybody’s sitting there, like, staring…Both of them were like, ‘Oh, please don’t make us do that.'” Yet, Courtney seemed to remember it perfectly in the above Instagram video. Suspicious!
Let us just be forever grateful that we’ve been bless with “The Routine” again.
