In memory, I can’t think of a film with a more hostile lead up to its release than the all-female Ghostbusters reboot.

The film’s trailer is still the most disliked YouTube video of all time, and it doesn’t take a paranormal investigator to work out this is all about gender.

But guess what? It’s a great film and that’s because the film didn’t shy away from gender. It’s brave, it’s bold and it regularly mocks the savage abuse the film first reared, with a plethora a subtle digs at online trolls. Whether laughing at the notion of women “shooting like a girl”  or reading YouTube comments lambasting the group with: “Ain’t no bitches gonna hunt no ghosts.”

The story follows Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy as Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, childhood friends and lifetime ghost- believers. After years apart the two reunite, along with Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones to hunt ghosts that are increasingly haunting Manhattan.

The film is exciting, action-packed but it is also fucking funny. Funny in a way, I don’t know it could have been with a bunch of men. The chemistry between Bridemaids alumni Wiig and McCarthy is still comedy gold, SNL’s McKinnon is one to watch, she is a superstar and Jones provided the biggest laughs of the night.

Sorry fellas, but this cast of comedy pros was so good, that I can’t think of a group of male counterparts that would have been able to pull this off.

But apart from the women, Chris Hemsworth was so bang on. His character Kevin played along the ‘bimbo secretary’ stereotype, played in previous films by Annie Potts, it was so great, I think the archetype of a bimbo male needs to break into more mainstream movies.

He was hilarious and I can honestly say, Ghostbusters is the most I’ve ever enjoyed watching him. Bring on the bimbo boys, it’s a refreshing departure from the typical airhead chicks, that have become so exhaustively sexist to watch.

Fittingly, the awful response to the female reboot from trolls and professional misogynists, actually ended up giving the film its own vindication. This is a film about female friendship and women kicking ass, ghosts – and guys – better watch out.

Ghostbusters is released across Australia on Thursday 14 July, 2016.
