The last emoji update brought us an avocado and Harambe – thus completing all our lives – but the next emoji on the agenda might finally be red-haired. For an upcoming meeting by the emoji control board’s Unicode Technical Committee, a redhead emoji on emoji keyboards is being proposed.

But it turns out simply adding some ginger hair atop any emoji is no easy task. Jeremy Burge is a technical adviser at Unicode and told Mashable:

“I think the biggest reason we haven’t seen the redhead emoji gain much traction is that it’s a big ask to add a redheaded version of every single emoji. On the other hand, would it be enough to just had a man and woman with red hair?” Burge said.

Apple has recently pushed to diversify its emojis, including more racial and gender variations, so creating an emoji to represent the many red-heads out there is the obvious next step.

Change.org petition titled “Redheads should have emoji, too!” launched two years ago and has already gained more than 20 thousand signatures online.

“If you say your’e going to diversify, why not add a few red-haired emoji in the mix? Natural redheads may be rare at less than 2% of the world’s population but that is 138,000,000 iPhones waiting to happen.” the petition reads.

Considering the closest thing there is to a red-haired emoji is a Jack O’Lantern, it might be time for emojis to include our ginger mates.
