Why This Is A Great Time To Visit The Gold Coast
EIGHT LOCAL GETAWAYS ACROSS VICTORIA, QUEENSLAND AND TASMANIA
A series of images usually flash to mind when someone mentions the Gold Coast. You probably think of packed beaches, rowdy Schoolies revellers and pulsing nightclubs. It looks totally exhausting. But… it’s not actually the reality right now.
The world has changed a lot in the past 12 months and the Gold Coast has changed with it. With restrictions limiting some of the most wild aspects of this renowned party city and international tourism stopped completely, this might be the perfect time to plan a peaceful trip.
You can beat the crowds
Let’s face it: the Gold Coast is usually so busy because it’s sort of amazing. It’s always sunny, it has spectacular beaches and it’s home to some of the best major attractions in the country. If you’re lucky enough to be able to travel there right now, why not take advantage of the most popular spots?
With way fewer tourists in the area, this is your chance to whiz around Dreamworld, Sea World and Movie World at whatever pace you like. Forget the giant queues. You can probably ride The Giant Drop 10 times if you want. Pacific Fair, one of the largest shopping centres in the country, will also definitely be less hectic. And you shouldn’t have any big problems finding a decent spot on Burleigh Beach or even Surfers Paradise.
Just make sure you don’t leave without stopping by the iconic Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Someone has to keep hugging those koalas.

You don’t need to spend big
It’s so easy to entertain yourself on the Gold Coast during summer, and you don’t need a lot of cash on hand to do it. A day spent at the beach or exploring a picturesque walking trail doesn’t have to cost anything at all.
From the cityside Broadbeach all the way down to cruisy Coolangatta, the Gold Coast has some of the most idyllic beaches in Australia. You can kick back on the white sand with a good book or throw yourself on top of a wave or two. If you need a bit of help with the latter, there are loads of great surf schools in the area.

But the Gold Coast’s natural beauty goes way beyond the beach. If you drive just 10 minutes inland, you’ll be immersed in the hinterland: a lush expanse of prehistoric forests, waterfalls and hiking trails.
A big circuit in Lamington National Park is a great way to work up a sweat, and you can cool off with a peaceful paddle at Currumbin Rock Pools when you’re done. Pack a few sandwiches and you’ll only be out of pocket one day’s petrol!
It’s perfect for outdoor dining
So much of the hospitality industry has pivoted to outdoor dining in the past year to comply with health and safety regulations. But bars and restaurants on the Gold Coast have been doing this well for decades — in fact, the area is home to some of the most impressive and innovative outdoor venues in the country.
True to its name, The Collective houses five kitchens — each specialising in a different cuisine — and a cocktail bar in what used to be the Palm Beach post office. There’s room for up to 300 people in this open-air dining space, and it’s so close to the ocean you can enjoy the fresh sea breeze.

Miami Marketta offers a similar night out, with an added show. This huge market has four bars and 20 stalls with street foods from all around the world. Its main stage also features performances from local and touring musicians. Recent acts include Tex Perkins and Boo Seeka.

We all desperately need a bit of R&R right now. The beach is a great start and a few cocktails will certainly help. But booking a stay at RACV Royal Pines Resort will lock you in for some 24/7 relaxation.
