Who here has ever been personally victimised by an unwanted dick pic or abuse via text or on social media?

Today was the launch of the campaign #EndViolenceAgainstWomen on twitter. A group of women dedicated to naming and shaming those who send abuse online.

Members of this online community have been naming those who pursued columnist Clementine Ford with comments such as “kill yourself” and “b*tches like you are the reason men are prone to go violent”.

They’ve been labelled “trolls” by the media, however, the majority of the people that send hateful, threatening and vulgar messages on social media are almost certainly abusers of the people they contact.

One member of the group, Kerri Sackville noted;

“We’re not slandering them, we’re not abusing them, just posting their name. The comments are already in public domain, it’s just taking that next step.”

None of the men posting these comments are hiding behind anonymous profiles or pseudonyms either.

“They feel they can be in the public arena without any fear or consequence or retribution and I want men to know we are watching.”

It has been noted by many of the people – some men included – in this new online presence to stop online abuse, that women that are outspoken get much more hate and online abuse than outspoken men.

“You get people like Alan Jones … who can be incredibly right wing and express controversial views and people might call them idiots or morons … no-one threatens to rape them.”

You can follow the hashtag #EndViolenceAgainstWomen  and #IStandWithClem on twitter where many screenshots such as these are appearing:

Many female and male figures in the online community have shown their support. So far it has appeared to have a positive impact with minimal pushback. *applause*
