Musical theatre nerds get ready, the production hailed as redefining musical theater is coming to Australia.

One word: Hamilton.

To say Hamilton is a game-changer in the world of musical theatre would be a gross understatementThe Wall Street Journal even called it “the best and most important Broadway musical of the past decade”.

The production is currently sold out on Broadway until September 2016 at $300 dollars a ticket, and available tickets are often allocated through a lottery. It has been rumoured that black market tickets are going for over $4,000.

So yeah. It’s kind of a big deal.

Initially conceived as ‘The Hamilton Mixtape’-  a collection of songs about America’s lesser-known founding father Alexander Hamilton, the off-Broadway show quickly stunned audiences and was moved to Broadway and has been an insane breakout success.

Hamilton somehow perfectly fuses classical music with hip-hop and pop – some have called it Les Miserables meets 8 Mile – and tells the tale of the guy who founded America’s banking system, all through rap.

The production was written over seven years by Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda who also stars alongside a refreshingly diverse cast, comprised of largely black and Hispanic performers.

The two-disc soundtrack for Hamilton reached number three in the rap charts and was the highest selling cast recording from the past 50 years. The king of musical theatre himself Andrew Lloyd Webber even told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, with envious eyes: “I wish I’d written Hamilton.”

According to the New York Times, producer Jeffrey Seller is working with Sir Cameron Mackintosh on a production of the musical to open in London in 2017, which will then go on to open in continental Europe and Australia- possibly by 2018.

While no more details have been disclosed about the Australian production, the article claims that Seller will be working with Miranda, casting director Bernard Telsey and the show’s director Thomas Kail to choose the 10 lead actors/understudies for the touring shows, with the majority of roles likely being won by non-white actors.
