After years of anticipation, House of Dragon dropped its first episode on Monday and tbh, it was worth the wait.

The Game of Thrones prequel has proven to be a huge ratings success, drawing in 10 million viewers to become HBO’s biggest premiere ever. And it’s not just a success in terms of viewership, the premiere has received mostly glowing reviews too.

The first episode takes place 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, a pivotal Game of Thrones character who met a grisly (and controversial) fate at the end of the original series. The prequel series returns to Westeros to chronicle the downfall of the Targaryen empire, introducing King Viserys Targaryen, his daughter Rhaenyra, and her shifty uncle Daemon– oh, and there’s dragons, of course!

The premiere begins as the King’s wife Aemma is pregnant with a baby expected to be Viserys’ heir. There’s tension brewing between Viserys and his brother Daemon, who is pure chaos: when he’s not getting frisky in a King’s Landing brothel, he’s randomly slaughtering villagers. He’s also an accomplished jouster who remains undefeated until he mets his match in Ser Criston Cole, who I reckon is going to be the show’s heartthrob. Jon Snow is shaking.

Aemma ends up dying during an extremely graphic birthing scene, where Visery elects to save his unborn baby over his wife, assuming he would be getting a male heir. He does get a male heir. Yay? But the baby dies shortly after being born. This means that the only heir left is Rhaenyra, who is sworn in as the next Queen after Viserys runs the next best option, Daemon, out of King’s Landing because he was caught celebrating the baby’s death at a brothel.

Families! Can’t live with ’em, can’t get them to stop plotting to dethrone you. Ammirite?

In short, the first episode was truly wild. There was sex, there was GoT throwbacks, there were so so so many gruesome scenes that will haunt me forever, but ultimately, it was a sensational premiere. And the cherry on top is the hilarious memes the episode has inspired.
