House of the Dragon has dropped another cracker of an episode this week ahead of next week’s finale.

FYI: This should go without saying but the rest of this article is packed with spoilers, so if you’re not across episode nine then kindly see yourself out of this browser window.

Bye, bitch.

Okay! Now we’re back in a safe space, the latest episode began as the news of King Viserys’ death was being relayed to Queen Alicient, and her father and Hand of the King, Otto Hightower. She then called the small council to a secret meeting where she not only dropped the news that Viserys was dead, but said his final wish was “for Aegon to be king,” as she claimed, “It’s the truth, out of his own lips.”

Just to recap episode eight for a sec: in the final minutes before his death, Viserys was rambling to Alicient in a drug-induced haze and presumedly thought he was talking with his daughter, Rhaenyra, and not his wife. Alicient took what he said as him legitimising Aegon’s claim to the iron throne, when in fact he was merely expressing his approval of Rhaenyra as heir.

Oh boy! It’s a real mess! And when Alicient shared the plan for Aegon to be king, the majority of the council readily agreed, as they’ve been gagging to kick Rhaenyra to the curb. Well, besides Master of Coin, Lyman Beesbury, but he swiftly gets his head smashed in by Ser Criston Cole, who continues his campaign to be the worst person in Westeros.

The awkward part is that with Rhaenyra left as the only living person with a stronger claim to the throne than Aegon, the chances that herself and her Targaryen/Velaryon family with Daemon will get to stay alive, doesn’t seem too likely.

As the small council agreed to install Aegon as king, all that was left to do was, err… find and tell him. After a lot searching, he was found but confessed to his brother Aemond that he didn’t want to be ruler of the seven kingdoms. Well, that was until his coronation where he was crowned king to a room of cheers, and you could practically see the spirit of Joffrey Baratheon sink into Aegon’s teenaged body.

However, just as Aegon started pumping his sword in the air like he was fist-pumping on Jersey Shore, a dragon soared into the hall, crushing the crowd, and edging towards the new king. Whomst is riding the dragon? Princess Rhaenys Targaryen! She had fled during the coronation, as she was well aware that her days were numbered.

I mean, what an entrance!

Rhaenys could have burned them all to the ground, but instead she just made a goddamn scene and then flew off… probably to pay a visit to Rhaenyra and Daemon and spill some real tea.

One thing is for sure: Rhaenys Targaryen is the moment!!

As we prepare for the final episode and an inevitably torturously long wait for Season 2, the struggle is real.

The final episode of House of the Dragon drops on Monday on Binge.
