5 Questions To Ask Before Choosing A Uni (That Aren’t About Study)

Uni might seem like an even harder version of high school, but it’s so much more than that. Sure, you’re going there to get a degree, but at uni you get to study what you’re interested in, can join clubs, go to parties, and meet people who really get you.

It’s important to ask yourself what kind of experience you want at uni, and the best time to do that is at an Open Day.

Think of it as a free sample before you commit to spending three to five years at a university. At an Open Day, you can investigate the clubs, courses, facilities, and study opportunities at a uni and check out the vibe of the place.

Here’s our guide to nailing Open Day, and all the questions you should ask when you’re there.

1. What do you do for fun?

You won’t spend all your time in classes or studying, so ask what student clubs a uni has. Most clubs are run by and for students and can be about anything from board games to music or Quidditch.

Most unis also organise creative and cultural activities for students. At ACU, for instance, you can join a choir, take music lessons or language classes, join the debate team, and sign up for art competitions.

Open Day is a great chance to suss out the existing clubs and meet the people who are involved. When you get to campus for real, you’ll already know what’s available and won’t waste any time getting started.

2. What are the people like?

Are they nice? Are they helpful? Could you see yourself hanging out with them for the next few years?

It’s true that the friends you make along the way can be one of the best parts of uni. And even though you probably won’t make lifelong friends in a single day, Open Day at least gives you a chance to meet people and see if you like them.

3. What are the facilities like?

A good library can become your home away from home while you’re at uni. Carve some time out of your Open Day experience to check it out – it should be well-stocked with good tech and comfortable study spaces.

4. Do you want to study overseas?

Ignoring the current problems with international travel, uni can be a great opportunity to see the world, and hopefully you’ll be able to travel overseas again during your degree. Ask about the university’s study abroad program to find out which courses are eligible and which countries you can visit.

5. Is there much happening on campus?

Is there a student association that throws parties or hosts gigs? Does the uni invite guest speakers or organise networking events? Maybe you’d prefer a quieter experience and want to suss out if you’d be comfortable on campus.

These won’t make or break your uni experience, but it’s important to study somewhere you enjoy spending time.

Now that you know what to ask, you’re ready to attend an Open Day. Have fun and ask lots of questions!
