How To Figure Out What To Do With Your Life When You Have Literally No Idea

Finishing your last year of high school is stressful. On top of cramming for supposed life-defining exams, trying to submit last-minute assessments, and attempting to maintain any kind of social life, you’re expected to have an answer to that dreaded question: “What are your plans after school?”

But if you don’t know what you’re doing with your life, don’t sweat! We’ve got you covered, with some totally practical steps that’ll get you on the path to success.

#1 Take Your Burning Q’s To A Higher Power

Some decisions – like figuring out what the actual heck you’re going to do with your life – are simply too complicated to make solo. We recommend consulting a higher power.

Read your weekly horoscope, dust off a magic 8 ball, carve “YES” and “NO” on both sides of a rubber and throw that sucker high in the air, consult a psychic – whatever it takes, ya feel?

#2 Ask Your Mum & Dad

Or your sibling, friend, teacher, mentor, dog – anyone in your life whose opinion you respect and, at the end of the day, has your best interests at heart.

When you’re totally confused about what’s the next practical step for you after high school, getting an outsider to weigh in can seriously do wonders. While you’re busy internally screaming, they can offer some A+ advice because, let’s be real – they probably know you better than you know yourself at the minute.

#3 Wait For It To Come To You In A Dream

Sure, you could put in the work to figure out what to do with your life, but you could also just wait for a premonition. Don’t know about you, but we reckon one of those sounds better than the other.

All you’ve gotta do is slip into your comfiest pyjamas, chuck on a sleepy playlist, sink into a snoozy abyss and let your subconscious figure this junk out on its own. You’re doing amazing, sweetie.

#4 Go To An Open Day

You’re about to enter the world of adulthood, and one of the biggest parts of being a grownup is booking your own appointments. Breathe in, out, and know everything’s going to be OK.

Register for a TAFE NSW Open Day at your nearest participating campus. It’s super easy. All you’ve got to do is visit the TAFE NSW website, find a time that suits you, let them know you’re coming, and remember to show up.

Whether you leave with a better idea of what’s next or not, you’ll feel better for just checking something off your to-do list.

#5 Buy Yourself A New Camo Getup

This is a stressful time, so treat yourself to some fly new threads! Buy them in an always-stylish camouflage print so you can blend into your surroundings and can exist there for eternity the next time somebody asks what your post-school plans are.

#6 Work With What You’ve Got

What are you good at, what do you enjoy, and is there a way you can combine the two to make money?

If you love cooking, have you considered a career in hospitality? If your favourite subject is English and you love talking to people, have you considered studying journalism?

Don’t make hard work of it, just have a good think and take comfort in the knowledge that you’re allowed to change your mind at any time.
