Last week The Australian published a controversial image by cartoonist Bill Leak, which was deemed both “racist” and “insulting” to Indigenous Australians.

The image depicted a police officer handing a child to his father, who is holding a beer and can’t remember his son’s name. The social commentary Leak is making is about as subtle as a sledgehammer.

The cartoon has since received widespread outrage for good reason. The illustration enforces already widespread stereotypes about Aboriginal people, their family relationships and alcoholism.

The cartoon was obviously vastly insulting to a whole lot of people, and in a move to offer a counter-view point, Indigenous Australians have taken to Twitter under the hashtag #IndigenousDads and shared images of the father-figures in their lives.

The hashtag, which began trending over the weekend, is packed with beautiful images of sons and daughters celebrating their dad.
