Scammer spring has well and truly sprung with the arrival of Inventing Anna on Netflix, which follows The Tinder Swindler taking the streaming platform by storm earlier this month.

The two Netflix shows kick off a slew of scammer-themed TV shows slated for 2022 — including a series focused on failed CEO of startup Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes, as well as a series charting the demise of global co-working brand WeWork.

Inventing Anna relays the true story of the meteoric rise and steep fall of Anna Sorokin, a Russian-born German con-woman who convinced New York high society that she was a German heiress named Anna Delvey. By building up a name for herself under false pretences, Anna was able to defraud banks, hotels, and even people who thought were her friends out of roughly $275k.

Anna was eventually arrested before being sentenced to serve four to 12 years in prison in 2019.

The nine-episode limited Shonda Rhimes series is told from the perspective of the journalist who profiled Anna and brought her story to an international audience. In the series, her name is Vivian (played by Anna Chlumsky) but in real life, the journalist who penned the legendary article was Jessica Pressler.

While Vivian shapes how Anna’s story is told by her researching and interviewing the people who were fooled by her, Anna is still the star of the show. And somehow, she comes across as likeable, which has a lot to do with how actress Julia Garner portrays her. Her accent is completely unique, as is how blunt she delivers her often iconic comebacks. You shouldn’t be rooting for this woman, but somehow she even manages to manipulate the viewer into being on her side.

This is despite Anna’s victims sharing how she tricked them out of thousands of dollars through false promises, including ex-friend and former Vanity Fair photo editor, Rachel DeLoache Williams, who was the person that worked with the police to execute Anna’s arrest in 2017.

Along with being completely enthralling, Inventing Anna also contains some delightful scammer Easter eggs: Fyre Festival’s disgraced cofounder Billy McFarland and drug company fraudster Martin Shkreli both make memorable cameos. Basically, if you love to gobble up scammer stories, Inventing Anna is a goddamn buffet.

And of course, the memes are amazing.
