Soccer fans are frenzied after the Italian football team just failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. They haven’t missed out on the World Cup in 60 years so it’s a bit of a shock to the system.

Call it what you want – we reckon it’s probably karma after what happened to Australia in 2006 – but for the sake of heartbroken Italians, let’s not go there. Oh wait – too late.

TOO BAD SO SAD

Playing in front of an extremely impassioned crowd at the San Siro stadium in Milan, the Azzurri lost to Sweden after failing to score at all in the match. They needed at least one goal to stay in the game after Sweden was victorious in the first-leg game in Stockholm.

Italy dominated possession and by the first half had a total of 11 shots on goal compared to Sweden’s one but the Swedish team was going hard on defense because they knew what was up. They had already scored their winning goal back in Stockholm and they knew it.

Now, at 1-0, Italy’s World Cup dreams are dead, shattered, over a single goal.

This is the first time in sixty years that the Azzurri won’t be a part of the World Cup, and people are in shock and distress. The crowd even started to boo after the final whistle.

It’s an emotional time for fans of the Italian soccer team, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon gave a teary comment after the disappointing match result.

“I’m not sorry for myself but all of Italian football. We failed at something which also means something on a social level. There’s regret at finishing like that, not because time passes.”

People will all deal in their different ways just give them space.

The Azzurri has won the World Cup four times, most recently in 2006, but oh how the mighty have fallen. Now Italy is the highest profile time to be missing from the 2018 FIFA line up in Russia, along with The Netherlands.

Sorry guys, it’s the end of an era.

Needless to say – the Aussie memes are off the charts:
