‘Guardians’ Director Reveals Devastating Meaning Of Groot’s Final Line In ‘Infinity War’
For the second time this year, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has absolutely broken our hearts with a casual tweet about everyone’s favourite tree-being, Groot. This time, he’s revealed what Groot’s final words in Avengers: Infinity War meant, and oh boy, it’s sad.
Needless to say, this post will involve spoilers for Infinity War. Only read on if you’ve seen the film, and ideally have some tissues on hand.
As you’ll know if you’ve seen the films, Groot communicates exclusively with the phrase “I am Groot”, which can mean anything under the sun given the circumstances. Most of the time, we can take a pretty good guess as to what he’s means, but sometimes it remains a mystery.
At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Groot’s final “I am Groot” is directed at Rocket, shortly before Groot disintegrates along with half the universe. A fan tweeted at James Gunn, who wrote Guardians of the Galaxy characters’ dialogue in the film, to ask what this final line meant, and here’s how he responded:
@JamesGunn Might be too soon to ask this, but do you know what Groot's last line is at the end of the movie?

That’s a pretty heartbreaking insight into Rocket and Groot’s relationship, and a pretty heavy final line for Rocket — one of the few characters who survives the film — to carry. It’s also an extremely heavy thing for Gunn to just casually tweet.
Excuse us while we cry about this for the rest of the day.
