From Scream To Meme Queen: Why Jamie Lee Curtis Is Everywhere Right Now

Jamie Lee Curtis is in her winning era right now. At long last, she’s finally having her moment in the sun.

She recently snagged herself an Oscar, is receiving praise for her chaotic role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, and is carving out her reputation as a happy-to-be-here supportive bestie. She’s meme-able, she’s memorable, she’s a mum friend — the gentle, harmless, supportive dag of the group.

As an aside, I’m working on a theory that once very famous actresses in Hollywood hit 55, the pipeline to either lesbian canon (hi, Laura Dern) or certified mum friend are equally strong.

Here are a few reasons why Jamie Lee Curtis is absolutely everywhere (all at once) right now.

Jamie Lee Curtis is an Oscar winner – finally!

Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Seen here, mouthing “SHUT UP”.

Curtis has been acting for 46 years (go off!), but she’s someone who tends to star in genre movies – she’s one of the original scream queens, thanks to her role in the Halloween films.

(If you’re not exhausted of the nepo baby discourse, a lil bit of trivia is that Jamie Lee’s mum Janet Leigh was the original scream queen, playing Marion Crane who gets murdered in the iconic scene of Alfred Hitchock’s classic Psycho. But I digress.)

Jamie Lee’s Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once had people divided. And not because she clearly should have won for her role in Freaky Friday.

The win is being seen as a ‘career Oscar’: a win given to someone as a nod to the entire sum of their career, not for their specific nominated role. This criticism is valid, seeing as Curtis won over fave Angela Bassett, nominated for her critically acclaimed performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

She was understandably stoked with the win. When celebrating the film’s sweep of Oscars, Jamie was photographed doing a cartoon-esque jump that landed her in a moon boot.

She’s rogue as hell on main.

Jamie Lee Curtis’ Instagram account is a solid argument to let celebrities manage their own social media. 3D printed bust fan art? Sure. Local dogs that need adopting? Absolutely.

Giant Jennifer Coolidge with a challenge to fight her in WWE? Yes.

Butt plug from the movie, next to her Oscar and SAG award? Of course.

She just really loves supporting women.

Jamie Lee Curtis first started being our unavoidable timeline angel when her reaction to Michelle Yeoh winning Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes went viral. It was seen as an unadulterated moment of joy and support for Michelle’s iconic win.

Obviously, she put it on a t-shirt.

Her award season campaign has been 90% championing Michelle Yeoh and 10% threatening Ariana DeBose’s haters, which we’ll get to.

Jamie Lee – you are ALL of us.

The queen managed to find herself in another viral moment when she was part of the most meme-able thing to happen in 2023 so far: Ariana DeBose’s BAFTAs rap

While it’s now being heralded as a camp classic, first reactions to the rap, which celebrated the women nominated at the BAFTAs, were… sour, to say the least. Reactions from the crowd seemed mixed, except, of course, from JLC.

When asked about the negative response to the reactions, Jamie Lee went into bat for Ariana, and absolutely slammed her haters.

“That woman is talent, with a capital T,” she said.

She’s a staunch trans ally.

With anti-trans legislation, misinformation and transphobic violence only increasing by the day, staunch trans allies are really appreciated by our community. We’re tired of trying to fight by ourselves.

Jamie Lee loudly and proudly supports her trans daughter, Ruby, taking every opportunity to spotlight the struggles the trans community face while showcasing her support. She also recently interviewed the amazing ALOK in an incredibly informative and powerful conversation. A must-watch for trans allies (and trans folks who feel like experiencing all the trans joy).

We really stan a supportive mum. She even gave her Oscar they/them pronouns, which obviously pissed off the conservatives. A lot. Lmao.

Jamie Lee, you are all of us.

So while JLC stays in her supportive mum friend era, I’m big-time stanning.
